Warning my American clients about Canada Day (July 1)
Providing advanced notice to my American clients about my upcoming statutory holiday in Canada
Here is a nightmare scenario for my (American) clients: They need something urgent from me, but they have no idea that I am away from work on a statutory holiday in Canada.
Although this is not in my job description, it is in my and my clients’ best interests for me to warn them about asymmetric holidays in advance.
Tuesday, July 1, 2025, will be a holiday (Canada Day) in Canada - but not in the USA. In my job as a Senior Data Scientist at Acosta, I serve only American clients. Thus, I do two things to prepare for this asymmetric absence:
1) I warn them in advance about my absence on that day.
2) I write an auto-reply from my email account to be sent on that day.
This helps my American stakeholders, because they can then plan ahead for any logistical challenges that may arise as a result of my absence. Speaking from experience, my clients have greatly appreciated these two practices, and I have strengthened their trust in me as a result.
