Welcome to The Data Copywriter!
Are you a statistician, data scientist, data analyst, or professional in an adjacent field? This newsletter has articles to
teach you technical topics about statistics,
develop your career (job searching, networking, interviews) in the field of data & analytics,
provide advice about communication (writing, running meetings, public speaking).
The articles are free. If you click on the “Subscribe” button, you can enter your email address and get the free articles in your email inbox. They will arrive at 9:30 AM Eastern time on Monday to Friday.
If you subscribe for $5 USD per month, you will access a monthly post that invites questions to me. Subscribers will get to vote for questions to rank them by popularity, and I will answer the top 3 questions every month. This is a good way to get my advice about how to advance your career and improve your communication skills in data & analytics.
Why am I writing this newsletter?
Throughout my professional experience, I have noticed 3 disturbing trends:
The discourse about data & analytics often lacks technical rigour, which encourages impostors and braggarts to spread false information.
Many professionals in data & analytics struggle with communication - both microscopically (spelling, grammar, sentence structure) and macroscopically (public speaking, client consultation, running effective meetings).
Universities do not adequately prepare their students to find fulfilling jobs or maximize their career potential - especially for statistics students (and those who want to work in data & analytics).
I want to change all of these trends - one article at a time. Whether you are a junior professional or an experienced executive, you will likely find something valuable about statistics, communication, or career development.
Who is the writer of this newsletter?
My name is Eric Cai, and I am a statistician, copywriter, and communication consultant in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in mathematics from Simon Fraser University (SFU). Along the way, I completed 9 paid internships in 7 different fields. I also won the Canadian Society for Chemistry’s Silver Medal for being the top 4th-year chemistry student at SFU in 2008.
I then earned a Master of Science degree in statistics from the University of Toronto.
Since completing my post-secondary education, I have worked at 6 organizations for over a decade.
I currently work as a Senior Data Scientist at Acosta, where I specialize in measuring the sales impact of retail interventions for supplies of consumer packaged goods. In 2022, I won a Acosta Business Intelligence Innovation Award, and I earned a promotion shortly afterward.
